Prominent Figures of the Kerala Church- 118
Archbishop Mar Joseph Powathil
“Archbishop Powathil is currently facing allegations related to liturgical reforms. In this matter, I have only one thing to say. He is a person who shows perfect obedience to the Holy See in all matters. He has no hesitation in following the instructions from Rome. It is the knowledge and understanding that guide him. I have never experienced him arguing for his personal benefit. On the contrary, I have always seen him standing for the good of the Church.” These words were spoken by Cardinal Mar Antony Padiyara about Archbishop Powathil.
In the preface of the book In Truth and Love (published in connection with Archbishop Mar Joseph Powathil’s Golden Jubilee of episcopal consecration), Archbishop Mar George Valiyamattam writes, “To restore the uniqueness of the Church by rectifying the deviation that history has imposed on the Syro-Malabar Church, the father in Powathil’s efforts is known for his deep understanding of the Church’s authoritative teachings and the balanced style in which he engages with believers. Though he has been misunderstood at times, his answer to such criticism is one of deep spiritual discipline and reliance on God. His work for the Church shows complete fidelity to the ecclesiastical hierarchy and to the mission of the Holy See. Powathil’s efforts show his great contribution to the mother church and his commitment to its integrity.”
